Ethereum and Base Diverge on Account Abstraction Standards
The partnership between Ethereum and Coinbase's Layer 2 network, Base, has broken down over the operational standards for next-generation crypto wallets. The collaboration aimed to establish a unified account abstraction standard, but the vastly different requirements of their respective chains have led to a divergence.
Ethereum continues to advance framed transactions, while Base implements an independent native account abstraction design. This will likely require wallets to adapt to different transaction architectures across various networks.
The core conflict lies in how much freedom the protocol should grant accounts and how many rules and constraints the blockchain should impose on transactions before execution. The current proposals aim to enhance wallet programmability, supporting features such as gas sponsorship, passkeys, and flexible authentication.
Ethereum core developer Matt Garnett stated that friction between Layer 2 networks is an inevitable outcome due to market competition forcing them to roll out new features at a pace far exceeding that of the Ethereum Layer 1 network.
