Ethereum and Base Fork Account Abstraction Efforts
Ethereum and Base have abandoned their efforts to create a shared standard for account abstraction, a feature that would allow users to pay network fees without holding ETH. The two proposals, EIP-8141 and EIP-8130, took different approaches, with Ethereum prioritizing censorship resistance, privacy, and security, while Base focused on scalability, customization, and compliance. Despite attempts to reconcile the two designs, the teams were unable to find a solution that met both sets of requirements.
The split will likely affect wallet developers, who may need to support both formats in order to interact with both networks. However, EIP-8130 accounts can still reach other chains through the existing ERC-4337 standard.
According to Derek Chiang, co-author of one of the proposals and founder of ZeroDev, 'while we identified a number of technical solutions, they all required one side or the other to compromise at least a little bit on their core goals.'
