Ethereum Blob Burn Falls Short of Network Costs
The Ethereum network's blob burn is failing to cover its annual costs, highlighting a significant discrepancy in the current pricing mechanism. According to recent data, the direct blob base-fee burn reached only $37,500 per year, which is less than 7.5% of the estimated network cost of around $0.5 million annually.
The network requires more compensation for bandwidth, electricity, and hardware expenses, but the current system does not cover these costs. Rollups like Base and Linea have seen improved profit margins since the Pectra upgrade in May 2025, with daily blob purchases increasing by 20.8% to around $11,015 in total costs.
The median cost per blob object has decreased significantly, from an average of $16,250 to just $0.00000000035. However, this surplus capacity makes blobs virtually free and does not directly finance the infrastructure that carries them.
