Ethereum Completes First L1-to-L2 Atomic Transaction Under EEZ Framework
Ethereum has successfully tested an atomic transaction between its mainnet and a Layer 2 network under the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) framework. The test involved transferring 0.001 ETH and coordinating state changes across both layers, demonstrating synchronous composability. This means operations involving Ethereum and EEZ rollups can be bundled together, ensuring they either all succeed or all fail, eliminating the need for separate bridge infrastructure.
The EEZ framework, developed by Gnosis and Zisk with funding from the Ethereum Foundation, aims to reduce fragmented liquidity between rollups. The Gnosis Chain is expected to be one of the first major implementations of EEZ, with its first rollup block anticipated around December 2026 or January 2027. The framework allows connected rollups to call Ethereum contracts within a single transaction, streamlining interactions between different networks.
While the mainnet test is a significant milestone, the framework is still under development. The core protocol codebase is labeled as an early-stage implementation, with ongoing design refinements and testing. The August development update highlighted progress in resolving critical issues and testing Rollup 0 on the Chiado testnet. However, the system has not yet been audited, and interfaces may still change.
Jakub Gregus, co-founder of Hydration, described the mainnet demo as one of the most important milestones in crypto, suggesting Ethereum could greatly benefit from this technology. Despite the optimism, the initial deployment of Gnosis Chain as an EEZ rollup will include additional trust assumptions until the planned live zero-knowledge proof system is ready.
