Ethereum Developer Exodus: Builders Flock to Faster, More Efficient Chains

The Ethereum developer community is experiencing an exodus as builders opt for other chains. By 2026, Ethereum's lead in developer numbers has narrowed, but it still dominates with around 7,700 monthly active developers. However, its appeal as a destination for users and funding may be diminishing over time.

The diversity of scaling solutions on Ethereum makes it harder for developers to think about a single Ethereum experience. Rollups, optimistic rollups, and validiums have created multiple destinations for developers, each with their own bridges, sequencers, RPC, explorers, liquidity, account abstraction layers, and security risks.

Developers are choosing chains based on factors such as speed, breadth of adoption, funding, programming model, and cross-chain infrastructure complexity. Solana, Sui, and Aptos offer better performance for specific use cases, while Ethereum's upgrades are slower and more cautious due to its multi-client development model.
