Ethereum Developers Fix Prysm Update for Glamsterdam Sepolia Test
Ethereum developers released a last-minute update to the Prysm software to ensure validators automatically produce blocks with a 200 million gas limit during the Glamsterdam upgrade’s Sepolia test. The update, version 7.2.1, was pushed out late Monday to prevent some validators from continuing to produce blocks at Sepolia’s previous 60 million gas limit.
The Glamsterdam upgrade, set to activate on Sepolia at 13:53:36 UTC on October 6, aims to test whether validators can reliably handle blocks more than three times larger than the current limit. Without the update, the test’s effectiveness would have been undermined, as the capacity increase was designed to assess the network’s ability to process larger blocks.
Gas is the unit Ethereum uses to measure computing work within a block. A higher gas limit allows the network to process more transactions and complex activities simultaneously, though it also increases the demands on validators' hardware. Ethereum has been gradually increasing block capacity to determine the optimal balance between performance and cost.
The 200 million gas limit applies only to the Sepolia test network, and the Glamsterdam upgrade has not yet activated on Ethereum’s main network. The test results will help developers decide the appropriate capacity for Ethereum’s main network, potentially leading to more efficient transaction processing and lower fees for users.
