Ethereum Developers Gear Up for Major Upgrade to Verkle Trees
The Ethereum community is working on a major upgrade to Verkle trees, a data structure that could significantly reduce storage requirements and enable statelessness. The Kaustinen testnet has been relaunched with modifications to the SuffixStateDiff container and ExecutionWitness. Developers are also considering EIP-4762 to manage gas cost changes for statelessness.
Verkle trees currently run 40% slower than Merkle Patricia Trees, but they offer a 23x reduction in witness size, which could be a major economic advantage. The transition from Merkle Patricia Trees to Verkle Trees is complex and requires a state migration that touches every account and contract on the network.
The Hegota upgrade targets the second half of 2026 to finalize the Verkle migration. However, some developers are considering an alternative approach with a binary state tree built from hash functions to solve quantum risks associated with elliptic curve cryptography.
