Ethereum Developers Propose Tapering Staking Rewards to Zero

Ethereum's staking reward curve has been criticized for creating an incentive to stake more ETH, leading to potential dilution and loss of credibility. Jerome de Tychey and Sam Jernigan, authors of EIP 8363, argue that the current issuance curve is a structural flaw with no equilibrium, causing the network to trend towards 100% staked.

The proposal aims to taper staking rewards to zero as the share of staked ETH approaches 50%, capping annual issuance at 0.5%. De Tychey and Jernigan believe that removing the subsidy for staking will drive ETH prices higher and unlock more productive uses of the asset, rather than reducing its value in DeFi.

The debate surrounding EIP 8363 has ignited a larger discussion about Ethereum's monetary policy and its impact on the network. Some argue that the proposal would trigger a mass exodus of ETH from DeFi, while others believe it will lead to increased demand for leverage and looping.
