Ethereum Developers Split Over Two Approaches to Abstraction

Ethereum developers have made progress on resolving a long-standing issue affecting wallet balances. The problem arises from the fact that moving stablecoins, like USDC, requires ETH gas fees. If users don't have enough ETH to cover these costs, their stablecoins remain locked.

A solution in the works is EIP-8141, also known as Frame Transactions, which has been moved from 'Considered for Inclusion' to 'Scheduled for Inclusion'. This upgrade aims to break down transactions into manageable pieces, eliminating the need for a single account to cover both gas fees and transaction costs.

Vitalik Buterin noted that important progress on Frames has been made in recent months. The proposal would allow an app to directly cover the fee or take stablecoins from the user and settle the ETH cost itself.

However, not everyone is convinced of EIP-8141's merits. A rival proposal, EIP-8130, claims a 63% gas reduction on transfers and has its own set of supporters, including Coinbase and Base. Pedro Gomes, a co-author on Frame Transactions, surprisingly expressed his support for EIP-8130 over the original proposal.
