Ethereum Devs Propose Quantum-Proof Staking Overhaul
Ethereum developers have proposed an overhaul of the deposit contract to quantum-proof staking. This change aims to protect against potential threats from quantum computers, which could compromise the security of Ethereum's Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus algorithm.
The proposal, put forth by Ethereum developer Mikhail Kalinin, suggests using a new type of deposit contract that would utilize 'quantum-resistant' cryptography. This would ensure that even if a powerful enough quantum computer were to be built, it could not compromise the security of the staking process.
Kalinin emphasizes that this change is necessary to safeguard Ethereum's PoS consensus algorithm against potential threats from quantum computers. He notes that while current estimates suggest that building a practical quantum computer may take several years or even decades, it is essential to be prepared for such an eventuality.
