Ethereum Draft Plan Prepares for Quantum Threat with New Validator System
The Ethereum network is taking proactive steps to prepare for the potential threat of quantum computers. A draft proposal called EIP-8394 would redesign how new validators join the network, making it more resilient against a future where quantum computers can break its cryptography.
BLS (Boneh-Lynn-Shacham) signatures are currently used by every Ethereum validator to prove their identity without revealing their private keys. However, these signatures rely on elliptic curve math that can be solved by quantum computers running Shor's algorithm, which could compromise the security of the network.
EIP-8394 proposes a new system where the validator deposit contract accepts multiple cryptographic systems simultaneously, including BLS and future quantum-resistant schemes. The proposal includes a 'scheme identifier' that tells the network which scheme is being used, allowing both old and new systems to coexist indefinitely.
