Ethereum Economic Zone Achieves Atomic L1-L2 Transfer on Mainnet
The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) initiative recently achieved a significant milestone by demonstrating an atomic Layer 1 (L1) to Layer 2 (L2) transaction on Ethereum’s mainnet. Eduardo Antuña Díez, a core contributor to EEZ, shared the development on X, emphasizing that atomic synchronous composability is no longer just a theoretical concept but a reality.
The transaction involved moving 0.001 ETH atomically from Ethereum’s L1 to an L2, showcasing the project’s interoperability technology on the mainnet. This demonstration was a technical proof of concept rather than a final product or protocol upgrade. Prior to the transfer, the process underwent an audit, live blob encoding, and tests with Cow Swap and Uniswap v4.
EEZ aims to unify Ethereum’s fragmented L2 networks, creating a cohesive ecosystem where capital can move more freely. Backed by the Ethereum Foundation and led by groups like Gnosis and Zisk, the initiative launched in early 2026. The goal is to reduce fragmentation between Ethereum’s main chain and its various L2 networks.
While the transfer is a major step forward, the project still has significant work ahead. Full two-way calls, nested cross-chain calls, and real-time proving are part of the roadmap through 2027. The core software is currently in an early stage of development, indicating that this achievement is just the beginning for EEZ.
