The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) has achieved a major milestone with the execution of its first atomic transaction between Ethereum mainnet and a layer-2 network. Announced by EEZ contributor Eduardo Antuña Díez on October 6, the transaction involved moving 0.001 ETH across layers in a single atomic operation, marking a shift from theoretical concepts to real-world implementation.

Atomic transactions ensure that all components of a transaction succeed or the entire operation reverts. This capability could enable smart contracts on Ethereum mainnet to interact seamlessly with those on layer-2 networks within the same transaction, eliminating the need for separate transactions and bridging infrastructure. The EEZ aims to address the fragmentation of liquidity and applications across Ethereum’s layer-2 networks, a consequence of its rollup-centric scaling strategy.

Launched in March by Gnosis and Zisk with support from the Ethereum Foundation, the EEZ targets synchronous composability, allowing applications to access Ethereum liquidity without creating separate bridged versions. While the recent transaction is a proof of concept, it does not imply immediate adoption by existing layer-2 networks like Base, Arbitrum, or Optimism. The experimental nature of EEZ means further development and testing are required before widespread deployment.

Gnosis Chain is set to become a major testbed for the EEZ architecture, with plans to transition from its current layer-1 setup to an EEZ rollup settling on Ethereum. The initial implementation, expected around December 2026 or January 2027, will use an interim proving system and centralized composer. The full specification, including bidirectional composability and real-time zero-knowledge proving, is expected to evolve through 2027.

The broader vision of EEZ is to combine Ethereum mainnet liquidity with the computational efficiency of layer-2 networks while maintaining an all-or-nothing execution guarantee. The recent transaction is a significant engineering milestone, but critical next steps include completing security audits and demonstrating reliable operation under real application traffic.
