Ethereum Economic Zone Completes First Atomic L1-to-L2 Mainnet Transaction
The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ), a project developed by Gnosis and Zisk with backing from the Ethereum Foundation, has successfully executed the first atomic cross-chain transaction from Ethereum Layer 1 (L1) to a Layer 2 (L2) on the mainnet. This milestone, announced on October 5, 2026, demonstrates what contributors describe as atomic synchronous composability, allowing seamless interaction between L1 and L2 without delays or partial executions.
The transaction involved moving 0.001 ETH alongside a rollup state update, serving as a technical proof rather than a retail transfer or product launch. EEZ leverages Zisk’s zero-knowledge proofs to bundle L1 calls and L2 updates into a single synchronized block, ensuring both layers execute or revert together. This design aims to reduce liquidity fragmentation across Ethereum’s growing Layer 2 networks.
Separately, Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade is scheduled to activate on the Sepolia testnet on October 6, 2026. This upgrade includes key features like enshrined proposer-builder separation and block-level access lists, aimed at improving network efficiency. However, it is unrelated to the EEZ transaction, which operates at the application layer rather than the protocol level.
At the time of writing, ETH is trading near $2,700, down slightly over 24 hours. While institutional flows remain a significant factor, traders are watching the $3,000 mark as a psychological level, pending positive ETF flows and smooth Glamsterdam rollout.
