Ethereum EIP-8141 Aims to Let Users Pay Gas Fees With Stablecoins
Ethereum developers are considering EIP-8141, a proposal that could allow users to pay transaction fees with stablecoins or other supported assets instead of holding ETH solely for gas.
The proposal, known as 'Frame Transactions', would separate transaction authorization, gas payment, and execution. This design would enable users to pay fees through stablecoins or other supported assets while the network continues to settle fees in ETH.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin mentioned on X that considerable work on Frames had been taking place over recent months, but the proposal remains a draft, meaning the final design and deployment details can still change.
The current requirement for users to have ETH available to pay transaction fees means that a wallet holding stablecoins or other tokens may be unable to move those assets if it has no ETH for gas. EIP-8141 would change this by dividing transactions into separate frames, allowing the account sending the transaction to differ from the account paying the fee.
