South African Regulator Bans Top Executives of First Publicly-Listed Bitcoin Firm
The South African Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) has taken disciplinary action against three top executives of Africa Bitcoin Corporation (ABC), a publicly-listed firm that was the first to adopt Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset. The FSCA has barred CEO Warren Wheatley, Chief Investment Officer Akshay Karan, and Head of Media and Investor Relations Tatum Wheatley from providing financial products or services for 20 years.
The executives have been removed from their operational and decision-making responsibilities at ABC and placed on precautionary leave. Their consulting services to the group have also been suspended. The three intend to seek reconsideration of the FSCA decisions through the Financial Services Tribunal.
ABC has appointed Executive Director and Bitcoin Strategy Head Stafford Masie as interim CEO, who will oversee the group's executive arrangements relating to a subsidiary fund. ABC currently holds 5.53 Bitcoins, valued at approximately $380,000, in its treasury reserves.
