Ethereum Envisions Quantum-Resistant Future with Recursive STARKs
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined a long-term vision for Ethereum as a cryptographic computing system by 2030. The proposal involves deeper verification and post-quantum security built into its core design.
The current development of Ethereum is seen as a progression from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, with a focus on optimizing the latter. This new direction would use PeerDAS data sampling and SNARK verification, allowing nodes not to download and re-execute every computation themselves.
Buterin envisions an 'Ethereum of tomorrow' that will have computation with tunable scales, multiple forms of multi-participant block construction, a highly optimized proof-of-stake system, and zero-knowledge proofs baked in at the base layer. This design could change how developers build applications, allowing computations to be processed in parallel or removed before they become part of a final block.
The development plan after the Lean phase includes recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, optimized consensus algorithms, and quantum-safe technology. Ethereum's protocol plan aims for quantum resistance across all layers by Dec. 2029 and calls for preparation against potential 'Q-day' as early as 2030.
