Ethereum Fees Plummet as Record Staking and Surging Transactions Signal Stronger Foundation
Ethereum's network fees have plummeted by 51% year-over-year to $64 million in Q2 2026, but this decline is not a sign of waning interest. According to new research from Bitwise, the drop in fee revenue is actually a reflection of increased capacity and efficiency within the Ethereum network.
Total transactions on the Ethereum network surged to 203.9 million in Q2 2026, up sharply from 121.1 million in the same period last year. Network throughput also improved markedly, rising from 15 transactions per second to 26 transactions per second.
Bitwise researchers noted that the 'divergence between revenue and activity is the theme of the quarter.' While fees fell, usage climbed, indicating that lower costs are fueling broader adoption of the Ethereum network.
The trend mirrors developments across other major blockchain networks. Solana processed nearly 10 billion user transactions while its fee collection dropped to $51 million. Avalanche handled 236 million transactions, a fourfold increase from 58 million a year earlier.
Record staking activity on Ethereum hit an all-time high, with active staked Ethereum reaching 40.2 million ETH, representing roughly 33% of the total circulating supply. Staking allows users to lock their Ether assets for a period of time to help secure the network and earn rewards.
