The Ethereum Foundation has outlined its plans for 2026, focusing on scaling the network's gas limit beyond 100 million and improving post-quantum security. The foundation said it will continue to increase the gas limit, which currently stands at 60 million, toward and beyond 100 million. This goal is part of a broader roadmap that includes advancing post-quantum-resistant security and enabling smoother cross-chain interactions.

The foundation's Post-Quantum team was established in January, with researcher Justin Drake announcing the move on X. The team will focus on ensuring Ethereum's readiness for a post-quantum world, where quantum computers could potentially break current encryption methods.

Ethereum educator Anthony Sassano stated in November that reaching 180 million gas limit is a baseline target for 2026, not a best-case outcome. The foundation also aims to improve user experience through native account abstraction and make smart wallets more capable and intuitive.
