Ethereum Foundation Unveils zkAPI for Private API Payments
The Ethereum Foundation has introduced zkAPI, a new payments mechanism that enables users to make private transactions for API services. zkAPI uses zero-knowledge proofs to separate payment information from user activities, providing an additional layer of privacy for users. This technology is now live on the Ethereum mainnet and is part of the Open Anonymity Project, which aims to increase privacy in web infrastructure.
zkAPI works by allowing users to deposit funds into a smart contract vault, which then issues temporary, single-purpose spending credentials. These credentials cannot be traced back to the original deposit, providing an additional layer of anonymity for users. To access a paid API service, a user's device generates a zero-knowledge proof confirming they possess adequate funds and preventing double spending.
The Ethereum Foundation has identified AI inference as the primary use case for zkAPI at launch, citing the sensitive nature of AI prompts and the increasing demand for privacy in data-driven applications. However, the Foundation emphasized that zkAPI's technology is adaptable and not limited to artificial intelligence applications alone.
