Ethereum Glamsterdam and Solana Alpenglow Upgrades Set for October 2026
Ethereum and Solana are both undergoing major protocol upgrades in October 2026, with Ethereum's Glamsterdam and Solana's Alpenglow set to redefine their respective consensus mechanisms. Ethereum's Glamsterdam, scheduled for the Sepolia testnet on October 6, combines two layer upgrades: Amsterdam for execution and Gloas for consensus. The upgrade includes ten EIPs, with EIP-7732 introducing enshrined proposer-builder separation and EIP-7928 enabling block-level access lists to push gas capacity higher.
Solana's Alpenglow is already live on testnet and replaces the existing TowerBFT consensus mechanism with a two-component system called Votor and Rotor. Votor eliminates the need for on-chain vote transactions, freeing up over 70% of block capacity for user transactions and reducing finality time to 100-150 milliseconds. Rotor, which replaces Turbine, aims to cut block data propagation hops, though its activation date is not yet confirmed.
The upgrades represent significant shifts in how both networks operate. Ethereum's Glamsterdam focuses on improving scalability and efficiency, while Solana's Alpenglow targets performance penalties and block space optimization. Both upgrades are expected to enhance their respective networks' capabilities, though mainnet activation dates for both remain tentative.
