Ethereum Glamsterdam Upgrade Live on Sepolia with 64 Million Gas
Ethereum's upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade went live on the Sepolia test network on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 13:53:36 UTC. While much attention has been given to the planned 200 million gas limit, the actual gas limit on Sepolia was measured at 64.2 million an hour after the fork. This discrepancy highlights the difference between testnet configurations and the eventual mainnet implementation, which is why no precise mainnet date has been set yet.
The fork was confirmed by the presence of new fields in the block headers, including blockAccessListHash and slotNumber, which are part of the upgrade's key changes. The gas limit on Sepolia began at 60 million and gradually increased in steps, reaching 64.2 million within an hour. This incremental approach allows for testing higher limits without overwhelming the network.
The Glamsterdam upgrade introduces two major changes: EIP-7928, which enables parallel transaction processing, and EIP-7732, which integrates the proposer-builder separation into the protocol. These changes aim to improve efficiency and reliability but do not automatically reduce transaction costs proportionally to the higher gas limit.
Ethereum's price stood at $2,712 (€2,410) on Tuesday, reflecting a 0.25% gain in 24 hours but a 0.75% loss over the week. Despite the testnet upgrade, market reactions were muted, with the price still far from its August 2025 high of $4,946.05.
