Ethereum Institutional Backs Plan to Cut Block Times to 10 Seconds
Ethereum Institutional has thrown its weight behind a proposal to cut Ethereum's block time from 12 seconds to 10 seconds, echoing the growing sentiment that speed is crucial for institutional adoption.
Developed by Ethlabs, EIP 8198, known as Quick Slots, would allow developers to configure slot duration, enabling them to gradually shorten block times without making a large reduction all at once. The proposal has garnered broad support from 20 DeFi founders, who see the potential for increased efficiency and reduced confirmation times.
Ethereum Institutional emphasized the need for speed, citing the growing institutional activity on Ethereum's network. With $180 billion in stablecoins hosted on mainnet, representing roughly 60% of total stablecoin supply, the nonprofit believes that shorter block times are essential for the network to remain competitive.
While EIP 8198 remains under consideration, with further implementation work and testing required before inclusion in Hegotá, Ethereum's planned upgrade following Glamsterdam, Solana and Zcash are already pursuing their own block or slot time reductions. Solana has reduced its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds, while Zcash is considering a similar change.
