Ethereum Introduces Blob Data to Boost Scalability
Ethereum has introduced a new type of temporary data storage called blob data through EIP-4844, also known as Proto-Danksharding. This upgrade allows Layer-2 networks such as Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, and zkSync to store large amounts of transaction data more efficiently and at a lower cost.
In simple terms, blob data helps Ethereum scale by making transactions cheaper without permanently storing all data on the blockchain. The temporary storage of blob data makes it available for 18 days before being removed, reducing the need for permanent storage and its associated costs.
The introduction of blob data is considered one of the biggest improvements for reducing Layer-2 transaction fees, with notable reductions seen in networks that have adopted this upgrade.
