Ethereum Introduces Stablecoin Gas Fee Payments for 2027 Upgrade
The Ethereum network is set to undergo a significant upgrade in 2027, which will introduce stablecoin gas fee payments. This change aims to relax one of the network's long-standing barriers to entry by allowing users to pay transaction fees with digital assets other than ETH.
The proposed 'Frame Transactions' feature, included in the 'Hegotá' upgrade, separates the account that approves a transaction from the account that pays the fee. This enables scenarios where a payment application pays gas fees on behalf of the user or receives stablecoins and settles the corresponding amount as fees.
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, stated that 'significant progress on Frame-related work has been quietly happening over the last few months.' The core objective of this plan is to reduce onboarding friction by allowing users to interact with smart contracts without separately purchasing ETH.
