Solana Boosts Transaction Size to 4,096 Bytes in Major Upgrade
Solana is set to increase its maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes on Wednesday. This change aims to give developers more flexibility when designing transactions, while legacy formats will remain supported across the network.
The increased limit will enable complex activities such as larger cryptographic proofs, multi-approval payments, and confidential transfers to be completed in a single Solana transaction rather than requiring several. This brings Solana's processing ability closer to that of data-flexible blockchains like Ethereum, which does not enforce a fixed transaction size.
The upgrade, known as Transaction v1, has been active on Solana's development and test networks. It is backward compatible, meaning wallets and applications that do not require the larger limit do not need to update immediately. However, some backend services and blockchain data providers must add support for Transaction v1 to ensure stability across the ecosystem.
The Solana Foundation stated that this change follows a technical upgrade in 2022, which updated the transaction traffic system. The new threshold aligns with a standard four-kilobyte memory page widely used in validator hardware, offering technical consistency and potential performance improvements.
