Ethereum Leads Altcoin Surge as Key Resistance Level Approaches
The cryptocurrency market is showing signs of an altcoin season, with Ethereum (ETH) emerging as a potential leader. Since mid-August, Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum have surged, followed by a significant rally in most altcoins. Despite expectations of a correction in September, the optimism for the last quarter of 2023 suggests a new cycle may be underway, with Ethereum at the helm.
Ethereum has outperformed Bitcoin and several rivals since August. As it approaches a key resistance level, its performance will indicate the potential of altcoins. If Ethereum breaks through this resistance, it could drive gains for competitors like Solana (SOL), XRP, and Binance Coin (BNB).
Recent data from CoinGecko shows lower market depth for Ethereum compared to previous years, meaning significant buying or selling could impact its price more easily. Additionally, only 14.6 million ETH are currently available on exchanges, a multi-year low. This scarcity could amplify price movements if demand rises.
The institutional demand for Ethereum is also growing. Major wealth managers are accumulating ETH, and American ETFs have seen significant inflows, despite recent outflows. Historically, Ethereum tends to strengthen in the last quarter, averaging a 17% gain since 2016. This trend could push ETH to around $3,200 by year-end.
The ETH/BTC ratio is nearing a critical resistance level at 0.032. Breaking this could propel the ratio to 0.04, implying an ETH price of around $3,400 if BTC hits $85,000. Longer-term, a new cycle led by Ethereum and altcoins could see ETH reaching $6,000-$6,500. Other altcoins like Solana, XRP, Hyperliquid, Zcash, and NEAR Protocol are also gaining momentum.
