Ethereum Liquidation Risks Grow as Market Holds Near $2,700
Ethereum (ETH) saw minimal price movement on October 7, trading at $2,699.33, down just 0.1% for the day. Despite the calm surface, the derivatives market was highly active, with $414.1 million in long positions and $640.6 million in short positions sitting in liquidation zones.
Across the broader crypto market, $148.3 million in leveraged positions were liquidated within 24 hours, with long and short positions nearly evenly split. Ethereum’s share of these liquidations ranged from $15.7 million to $18.4 million, highlighting the thin margins in leveraged trading within its tight price range of $2,700 to $2,715.
Leveraged trading works similarly to buying a house with minimal collateral, when prices move against a trader, the exchange liquidates the position to protect itself. This can create a domino effect, as forced selling or buying can further drive price movements. ETH futures open interest stood at $33.9 billion, indicating strong trader interest, though spot ETH ETFs have seen recent outflows.
Currently, the $640.6 million in short positions in liquidation zones could lead to forced buying if ETH rises, potentially fueling a sharper upward move. Meanwhile, the $414.1 million in long positions in liquidation zones could add sell pressure if the price drops. Monitoring open interest and spot ETF flows will be key in the coming days.
