Ethereum Network Exposed to Single Point of Failure in MEV-Boost Relay Market
The Ethereum network has fallen victim to a concentration of control in the MEV-Boost relay market. Four entities control an astonishing 95% of Ethereum blocks sent to validators, posing a significant threat to network stability.
In the last 14 days, MEV-Boost produced 91.5% of total Ethereum blocks, with bloXroute Labs holding 45.6% of this share. This concentration creates a massive single point of failure for the network, and if a few relays fail or act maliciously, the proposer-builder separation system breaks.
Relays act as intermediaries in the MEV-Boost process, facilitating auctions, ensuring valid payloads, and managing payments between builders and proposers. However, they also present trust issues, as builders must rely on relays to accurately assemble and reveal the payload of the block.
The market has fluctuated significantly since April 2023, when an attacker exploited a bug in the Flashbots relay code to drain $20 million from MEV bots. This exploit revealed that a rogue relay could control a massive percentage of Ethereum block space, underscoring the need for more robust security measures.
