Ethereum Nodes: The Unsung Heroes of Blockchain Security
Ethereum nodes are key components of the Ethereum network, responsible for keeping the blockchain honest and secure. Each node is an individual computer that holds a copy of the network's data and rules, checking new transactions and blocks on its own terms.
The independence of these machines is the core design principle behind Ethereum. With thousands of separate nodes double-checking each other's work, it becomes impossible for one bad actor or compromised machine to force false data onto everyone else.
Ethereum nodes come in three main flavors: full nodes, light nodes, and archive nodes. Full nodes check every block and transaction that comes through, keeping the most recent state stored locally. Light nodes are lighter, holding onto just the block headers and leaning on full nodes whenever they need anything more. Archive nodes keep the whole history stretching back to the genesis block.
Running an Ethereum node at home has become more manageable over time, thanks to faster sync options that allow a machine to reach a usable state without grinding through the entire chain history from the beginning.
