Ethereum Nonce Errors: What Happens When Your Transaction's Nonce Is Too Low
Ethereum's nonce system helps prevent replaying transactions and maintains the transaction sequence for an account.
A 'nonce too low' error means the nonce in your transaction is lower than the nonce currently expected or accepted for your account.
This can happen when you try to submit a new transaction with a nonce that has already been used by the sending account. For example, if an account has processed transactions with nonces 0 through 4, it should use nonce 5 next. If you try to submit another transaction with nonce 4, Ethereum will reject it because it's trying to reuse a previously consumed position in the account's transaction sequence.
The problem is not necessarily your ETH balance or gas fee; the issue is that the transaction is trying to use an already-consumed nonce. In most cases, the transaction is rejected by the node or not accepted into the transaction pool, meaning it doesn't become a new confirmed transaction, execute on-chain, transfer your ETH or tokens, or consume a new nonce.
You generally need to create and sign a new transaction with the correct nonce. A 'nonce too low' error is often caused by a nonce mismatch between your wallet, RPC provider, or pending transaction state, which can happen due to various situations such as pending transactions, using multiple applications, previous transactions being replaced, outdated wallet local state, or sending multiple transactions quickly.
