Ethereum Prepares 200 Million Gas Push on Sepolia Testnet
Ethereum is gearing up to test its next major scaling push on Sepolia, a testnet scheduled to activate on October 6. The Glamsterdam upgrade will increase Ethereum's execution capacity by combining the Amsterdam execution upgrade with Gloas on the consensus layer and introducing enshrined proposer-builder separation alongside block-level access lists.
The new upgrade introduces an optional gas-limit schedule that allows consensus clients to coordinate recommended preferences at specific epochs, but validators can still choose their own preference. This means that Sepolia's realized gas limit will move gradually as validators propose blocks rather than jumping immediately to 200 million when Glamsterdam activates.
However, the Ethereum Foundation notes that Prysm and Teku, two popular clients, will continue using a 60 million gas preference after activation unless validators explicitly change their settings. This means that validator participation in the 200 million preference is crucial for Sepolia's success.
