Ethereum Prepares for Post-Quantum Era with New Deposit Proposal
Ethereum developers have proposed a new deposit system that would allow for more flexible staking and potentially make it easier to transition to post-quantum cryptography in the future.
The proposal, which was opened on August 24 as Pull Request #12235, would give Ethereum's staking deposit contract the ability to accept variable-length validator keys and metadata. This would allow for new credential formats to be used in the future, but would not affect existing validators or their deposits.
The change is part of Ethereum's plan to transition to post-quantum cryptography by 2029, which it says will make its current cryptography resistant to threats from quantum computers. The deposit proposal is just one piece of this migration infrastructure and would not itself require a coordinated execution- and consensus-layer fork.
