Ethereum Price Slumps to $2,693.40, but Market Value Remains Strong
Ethereum's current price is $2,693.40 per token, down 11.82 dollars from yesterday and a $1,655.15 drop from last year, according to Fortune.com on October 1, 2026. The Ethereum network is the second-largest cryptocurrency, with a market value of around $233 billion, significantly behind Bitcoin's massive $1.33 trillion market cap but ahead of Tether's $183 billion.
Ethereum's value has skyrocketed more than 60,000% since its ICO in 2014, and in the five years from 2020 to 2025, it climbed another 46%. However, the price has also seen dramatic ups and downs, hitting nearly $5,000 in August 2025, a 1.6 million percent increase from its launch price.
Ethereum's unique value proposition lies in its decentralized computing platform, allowing developers to build and run applications on its blockchain without needing a central company or bank to manage things. This has led to its massive developer community building new tools, apps, and financial systems on top of it.
