Ethereum Proposes Gradual Reduction in Staking Rewards
Ethereum's staking reward rebalancing proposal, EIP-8361, has been submitted to the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) repository. The proposal aims to reduce the incentive for excessive staking growth beyond 50% of the total ETH supply.
The current staking mechanism rewards validators with a portion of the newly minted ETH, creating an incentive for validators to stake more ETH and potentially leading to a concentration of wealth among large-scale validators or institutions. The proposal aims to mitigate this effect by gradually reducing the staking reward as the staked ETH approaches 50% of the total supply.
According to the proposal's authors, including Jerome de Tychey and Justin Drake, the reduction in staking rewards would not completely eliminate the economic incentive for staking but would make it less attractive. The plan is designed to be a market-driven fix that aligns with the community's goals of maintaining a decentralized network.
However, not everyone agrees with this proposal. Obol co-founder Oisin Kyne expressed concerns that the reduction in staking rewards could lead to a concentration of wealth among large-scale validators and institutions, potentially compromising the network's decentralization. Stani Kulechov, founder of Aave, also criticized the proposal, arguing that it would make Ethereum staking yields unpredictable and less attractive to institutional investors.
