Ethereum Rally Faces Potential Risks Amid Thinning Order Books and Exit Queue
Ethereum (ETH) delivered a standout performance in the third quarter of 2026, surging by approximately 71%, its best Q3 rally to date. In contrast, Bitcoin (BTC) gained around 44% during the same period. However, beneath the surface, two key indicators suggest potential risks that traders may be overlooking.
The first red flag is the thinning of Ethereum's order books compared to Bitcoin's. This reduction in buy and sell orders can amplify price volatility, making Ether's price swings more pronounced. A shallower market means that the same amount of trading activity can lead to sharper increases or decreases in price.
The second warning sign is the record length of Ethereum's staking exit queue. As of October 6, 843,000 ETH, valued at around $2.3 billion, are waiting to exit staking. This queue, which currently has a wait time of roughly 15 days, plus an additional week for withdrawals, is the highest of the year. While this may raise concerns, it's important to note that the total staked ETH is nearly 36% of the supply, meaning the exit queue represents only about 2% of all staked ETH.
Despite the exit queue's size, more ETH is actually waiting to enter staking, about 1.42 million ETH, with a wait time exceeding three weeks. This suggests strong demand to stake ETH, which could offset some of the concerns about the exit queue. Additionally, not all exiting ETH may immediately enter exchanges, as some may be moved to private wallets or restaked with different providers.
Whether these trends should raise alarms about Ether's rally remains unclear. On one hand, the exit queue and thinning order books highlight potential risks. On the other hand, the robust demand to stake ETH may indicate continued confidence in the network's long-term security and profitability.
