Researchers have added EIP-8365 to the Ethereum repository, aiming to retire old 0x00 withdrawal credentials. The proposal seeks to exit active validators still using 0x00 and prevent new deposits from creating 0x00 credentials. This would benefit validators who have lost access to their signing keys.

The number of 0x00 validators has decreased significantly since the Capella upgrade, falling from approximately 600,000 to 9,290. Of the remaining 9,119 validators, 374 have not produced an attestation for over six months, while 253 have never attested in a 14-month observation period.

The proposal does not require identifying the owner of a validator or deciding whether a key is truly lost. Instead, it applies the same rule to every validator in the defined class, giving holders time to use the conversion path before activation.
