Ethereum Researchers Propose Quantum-Ready Validator Deposit Contract

Ethereum researchers have proposed a plan to secure ETH staking against potential threats from quantum computers. The proposal, filed on August 24, aims to make the Ethereum network post-quantum ready by introducing a deposit framework that supports variable-length public keys and metadata through scheme identifiers.

The urgency behind this proposal stems from research published in March 2026 by Google Quantum AI, which suggested that the number of qubits needed to break elliptic-curve cryptography could be roughly 20 times lower than previously estimated. This has raised concerns about the security of existing BLS signatures used by approximately 1 million validators on the Ethereum network.

The proposed deposit contract is designed to preserve full BLS compatibility during the transition period, requiring no immediate action from existing stakers. It also includes an irreversible BLS retirement switch, which would permanently phase out vulnerable signature schemes once flipped.

The goal is to migrate to leanXMSS-based signatures by around 2029, a process that will involve collaborating with competing schemes as the field matures. The Ethereum Foundation has established a Post-Quantum Security team, led by Thomas Coratger, to oversee this effort.
