Ethereum Researchers Propose Retirement of 0x00 Validator Credentials Amid Whale Wallet Rotation

The Ethereum ecosystem has seen significant developments in recent days, with researchers adding EIP-8365 to the Ethereum EIPs repository. This proposal aims to retire old 0x00 withdrawal credentials used by some validators.

EIP-8365 was added to the repository on September 17 with a Draft status. It seeks to exit active validators still using 0x00 and prevent new deposits that would create 0x00 credentials from being processed.

The number of 0x00 validators has decreased significantly since the Capella upgrade, from around 600,000 to just 9,290. However, this decline has slowed down, with 9,119 validators remaining in the group.

Researchers have identified that 374 of these validators have not produced an attestation for more than six months, while 253 have never attested during a 14-month observation period. This suggests that their signing keys may be lost.

The Ethereum Foundation has also made headlines with its transfer of $2.45 million in ETH to an unlabelled Gnosis Safe. While it is unclear whether this is a sale, it has added attention to the ETH price.

A whale wallet rotation of $45.83 million from BTC into ETH has also garnered attention, adding to the mix of protocol and market developments that are shaping Ethereum news.
