Ethereum Researchers Propose Tapered Issuance to Address Staking Dilution

Ethereum researchers have proposed a new draft proposal to address concerns about tokenomics and staking participation. The 'Tapered Issuance Burn' proposal, labeled EIP-8363, would gradually reduce consensus rewards for validators as the amount of staked ETH approaches a preset threshold of 60.25 million ETH, roughly 50% of the current supply.

The draft proposes burning an increasing fraction of validator consensus rewards to phase in over about 18 months. This change is designed to address dilution pressures from high staking incentives and make supply growth more predictable. According to proponents, combined with other mechanisms like EIP-1559 and burn models, tapering validator issuance would reduce long-term inflationary pressure.

Critics have raised concerns that the reward reduction could push out solo validators earlier than larger staking entities. Aave founder Stani Kulechov argued that the proposal would weaken institutional demand for ETH and reduce borrowing activity across DeFi, calling it 'hurtful' rather than helpful to Ethereum's goals.

The community has until Nov. 8 to review the draft, which remains in its early stages. With an associated Aug. 6 deadline concerning pull requests proposing additional EIPs for Hegotá, much remains to be determined through community discussion and selection process.
