Ethereum Sepolia Test Pushes Block Capacity to 200 Million Gas Limit
Ethereum is conducting a major test on its Sepolia testnet, pushing the gas limit to 200 million as part of the upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade. This represents more than a threefold increase from the previous 60 million gas limit, aiming to assess how validators handle the significantly larger block capacity before potential implementation on the mainnet.
The test follows the release of Prysm validator client version 7.2.1, which ensures validators automatically adopt the new gas limit once Glamsterdam activates on Oct. 6 at 13:53:36 UTC. Validators using the earlier version 7.2.0 would have needed manual adjustments to reach the 200 million gas setting, but the latest update streamlines the process.
While a higher gas limit could ease congestion during high-demand periods, it does not guarantee lower fees for users. The test on Sepolia will help developers determine if validators can reliably manage the increased workload. The Glamsterdam upgrade also introduces changes like EIP 8037, which adjusts the cost of state creation to better align with the permanent storage burden on nodes.
This test is not the first at this capacity level; a private rehearsal on Glamsterdam Devnet 11 previously simulated the 200 million gas limit. However, the Sepolia test provides a more realistic environment with diverse client configurations and operator setups. Despite the progress, the mainnet activation date for the 200 million gas limit remains undecided, with further announcements expected after additional client team reviews.
