Ethereum Sepolia Testnet Gas Limit Triples to 200 Million
Ethereum is set to conduct a major Layer 1 capacity experiment on its Sepolia testnet, increasing the gas limit to 200 million blocks as part of the Glamsterdam upgrade. This move more than triples the current gas limit of 60 million, aiming to study validator and client behavior under higher computational capacity per block.
The experiment is scheduled to go live on October 6 at 13:53:36 UTC, with Prysm version 7.2.1 implementing the new gas limit setting by default. Validators running older versions like Prysm 7.2.0 can still participate but must manually adjust their gas limits.
Glamsterdam, a joint upgrade for the execution and consensus layers, introduces features like a built-in proposer-builder split and Block-Level Access Lists to improve Layer 1 capacity. The upgrade also proposes gas fee modifications to address potential downsides of increased state capacity, including higher computational burdens on full nodes.
Despite the significant increase on Sepolia, the Ethereum Foundation has not decided on a mainnet activation date. The test provides valuable insights for developers to assess the stability of large contract sizes and the interaction between transaction throughput and state size growth before any mainnet deployment.
