Ethereum Sets Oct. 6 Date for Glamsterdam Upgrade on Sepolia Testnet
Ethereum developers have scheduled the next major upgrade for Sepolia testnet on October 6. The upcoming update, called Glamsterdam, will introduce several key changes to the network.
The most significant change is proposer-builder separation, which moves the handoff between specialized block builders and validators into Ethereum's protocol. This reduces reliance on outside middleware.
Glamsterdam also introduces block-level access lists, which record accounts and storage locations used during each block. Additionally, it changes gas pricing to better reflect data creation and access costs on Ethereum.
The upgrade will require Sepolia node operators to update both their execution-layer and consensus-layer clients before activation. Ethereum Foundation officials have warned that contracts relying on fixed gas stipends or hardcoded limits may need adjustments after the update.
Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum co-founder, stated that Glamsterdam could be followed by Hegotá in 2027, which would be the network's last 'normal' fork. This upgrade will shift development towards recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, optimized consensus, and quantum-safe cryptography.
The rollout dates for Glamsterdam on the validator-focused testnet Hoodi and mainnet remain unset.
