Ethereum Shorts Soar to Four-Year High on Bitfinex
Ethereum traders on Bitfinex are showing significant bearish sentiment, with short positions surging to their highest level in over four years. According to margin data from the exchange, nearly 73,056 ETH worth of shorts have been taken out, translating to approximately $195 million at current prices.
This marks a staggering increase of over 53,800 ETH in just one week, representing a 280% jump in bearish exposure. The timing is particularly interesting given Ethereum's recent price recovery of around 86%, from its mid-year low near $1,506 to its current price of approximately $2,670.
Historically, extreme readings in Bitfinex margin shorts have preceded periods of elevated volatility, regardless of direction. In the event that ETH continues to climb, the forced unwind of nearly $195 million in short exposure could accelerate the rally. Conversely, if ETH drops, the shorts would be validated and may add to their positions.
