Ethereum Staking Reward Burn Plan Withdrawn from Hegota Upgrade
The Ethereum community has been abuzz with discussions on staking reward burn plans, but one such proposal is now off the table. EIP-8363, also known as 'Tapered Issuance Burn', aimed to reduce Ethereum's issuance by burning a portion of validators' rewards. However, its authors have withdrawn it from consideration for the Hegota upgrade due to concerns that a fork scoping exercise was not the right venue for such a significant policy change.
Jérôme de Tychey, president of Ethereum France and co-author of EIP-8363, wrote on X that the proposal had become one of the most commented-on EIPs in history. Despite its popularity, several industry players, core protocol contributors, and clients voiced their opposition to including it in the Hegota upgrade.
De Tychey thanked Lido for offering to help lead a dedicated issuance process, which would allow for more focused discussion on the topic. He also acknowledged the concerns raised by DeFi figures like Stani Kulechov, founder and CEO of Aave, who called the withdrawal 'a Great move.'
