Ethereum Staking Reward Burn Proposal Withdrawn Amid Industry Concerns
The proposal to burn a rising share of Ethereum validator rewards, known as EIP-8363, has been withdrawn from consideration for the network's upcoming Hegota upgrade. Co-authors Jérôme de Tychey and others cited concerns from industry participants and core protocol contributors that a fork scoping exercise was not the right venue to settle an issuance policy change.
According to de Tychey, the objections raised since August can be grouped into five categories: security, industry impact, the design of the burn curve, the makeup of the validator set, and the effect on solo stakers. The authors have committed to a separate process for determining questions of Ethereum's issuance policy, with a multi-node process that includes workshops and forums.
The proposal, which aimed to burn a share of rewards proportional to the total level of staked ETH, had been met with opposition from some industry participants. SharpLink CEO Joseph Chalom had formally opposed the proposal, saying it would 'undermine DeFi', while Aave founder Stani Kulechov called it 'hurtful for Ethereum'. Kulechov has since quoted de Tychey's announcement of the withdrawal, saying 'Great move'.
