Ethereum Targets Quantum-Resistant L1 by 2029 Amid Post-Quantum Concerns
Ethereum has set a target of achieving quantum-resistant Layer 1 by December 2029, addressing concerns about post-quantum security. This target was established by the Ethereum Foundation's Protocol Cluster, which considers it non-negotiable until January 2027, when outside experts will reassess quantum progress.
The foundation has acknowledged that achieving quantum resistance requires changes to all three protocol layers: execution, consensus, and data availability. To achieve this, they are developing several technologies, including Frame Transactions (EIP-8141), which allows programmable validation, gas payment, and key rotation, as well as optional execution proofs (EIP-8025).
The Ethereum Foundation is also working on post-quantum consensus design, privacy tools, and faster finality. They have cautioned that core-protocol changes do not automatically protect everything built around Ethereum, including wallets, custody systems, bridges, rollups, and applications, which can retain classical cryptographic dependencies.
