Ethereum to Allow Stablecoin Gas Fees in 2027 Upgrade
Ethereum developers are moving forward with EIP-8141, also known as Frame Transactions, which is set to be integrated into the Hegotá upgrade planned for 2027. This proposal aims to allow users to pay gas fees using stablecoins, eliminating the need to hold ETH specifically for this purpose.
Under current protocol, Ethereum wallets can only send transactions if they have enough ETH for gas fees. With EIP-8141, a separate wallet could pay these fees in ERC-20 tokens, with the sender's wallet paying back the other wallet in stablecoins.
The distinction between frame and execution layers would prevent users from directly paying Ethereum protocol fees in USDC or another stablecoin. However, sponsors could pay ETH and receive stablecoins as transaction outputs from the user.
This change aims to simplify user experience and reduce the need for maintaining a separate ETH wallet to transfer other assets.
