Ethereum Transfer Fees Plummet by 85% Amid Shift to Layer 2 Networks
The average cost of transferring Ethereum (ETH) has dropped significantly, falling to around $0.095 per transfer compared to its peak of $0.72 in April.
This drop represents an 85% decrease and is attributed to several factors, including the activation of Fusaka in December 2025, which increased capacity for rollups and raised the gas limit to 60 million per block.
The summer months also saw a decrease in demand on the Ethereum mainnet, resulting in less pressure on fees. Additionally, the use of Layer 2 networks such as Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, and others has become more prevalent, allowing for a large number of transactions to be processed outside of the main layer.
This shift towards Layer 2s has resulted in blobs being used instead of traditional data storage methods, which are less costly. The network currently averages around 6.7 blobs per block on a daily basis, leaving considerable margin for growth.
