Ethereum Transforms into Cryptographic World Computer

Vitalik Buterin's vision for Ethereum's future is taking shape. In an essay published on September 27, he described the project as moving towards a 'cryptographic world computer'. This transformation would integrate blockchain consensus with zero-knowledge proofs, data sampling, and decentralized off-chain computation.

Buterin sees Hegotá, the next major upgrade scheduled for 2027, as a dividing line between Ethereum's current architecture and its future incarnation. The update will bring several key changes, including FOCIL, which aims to strengthen censorship resistance by distributing transaction inclusion authority further.

Ethereum is also shifting towards proof-based verification, with PeerDAS already integrated through the Fusaka upgrade. This approach reduces hardware requirements for users seeking strong verification guarantees while keeping trustless verification intact.
